5. Materials and Aids-

  • Green Monsters poem
  • Watercolor sets
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper
  • Water buckets

 

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. We will have a discussion about monsters

2. I will read the Green Hairy Monsters poem to the students

 

B. Development-

1. Following the story, we will discuss the characteristics of the monster that were talked about in the story (Big, green, hairy, googly eyed, etc.)

 

C. Practice-

1.The students will work to create watercolor paintings of their own green monsters, matching the characteristics of the monster in the story.

 

D. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. I will help the students work through their thoughts and guide them in their practices.

2. I will also help the special needs students to be able to correctly hold a paintbrush to be more easily able to paint the monster.

E. Evaluation-

1. Were students able to describe the characteristics of a monster, based on the poem and their previous knowledge?

2. Did the students paint a monster with some characteristics from the story?

 

7. Teacher Reflection-

I think that this lesson went well. I was very excited to hear all about the students past with monsters, in movies such as Monsters Inc. The students seemed to enjoy the poem and they were really creative with the overall project. If I were to do this lesson again, I think that I would try to find a second/longer story about monsters to get the students to refocus. After they made their first monster painting they got a bit distracted and I had to really try to keep them on topic. I think that a second story would really help with this.
